Expert Knob-and-Tube Assessment & Replacement provided by Advantage Electric, serving Minneapolis and surrounding communities with professional electrical contractor solutions.
Knob-and-tube (K&T) was the standard residential wiring method through roughly 1945 and is still found live in older Minneapolis neighborhoods, north Minneapolis bungalows, and original farmhouses across Anoka and Hennepin counties. K&T itself is not automatically dangerous — but it is ungrounded, brittle with age, and frequently buried under blown-in attic insulation, which traps heat against rubber insulation that has long since hardened.
Advantage Electric starts every K&T job with a circuit-by-circuit assessment. We map which circuits are still energized as knob-and-tube versus which were partially replaced by previous owners, identify junctions hidden in walls and attics, and check for the common danger signs: brittle insulation at terminations, splices made outside of boxes, contact with insulation, or shared neutrals across modern additions.
Replacement work is scoped to be as minimally invasive as possible. We pull new NM-B copper through accessible attic and basement runs, fish walls vertically where framing allows, and tie everything back to a properly sized panel with grounded modern circuits and tamper-resistant receptacles. Where full replacement is not in budget today, we can isolate active K&T from new work, abandon-in-place properly, and document remaining runs so insurers and future buyers see a clear picture. All work is permitted through the city or county AHJ and inspected before final close-out.
